I would focus the rumored change on Game Pass and would not offer any first party Microsoft game as a stand alone physical or digital purchase outside of the existing ecosystem. If you have a PS5 and you want to play Starfield, your only way to do so would be through a Game Pass sub. That allows Xbox hardware to retain some amount of relevance—the only console where its titles can be owned outright—and gives Microsoft some PR wiggle room to massage sentiment. It also sets Microsoft on a path towards a hardware agnostic future without going too far too fast; they can’t raze their Xbox console business to the ground while we’re in the middle of the current console generation. Doing that would devastate the brand even more that this potential announcement could.
