Apple really ought to say/do something about Siri

Apple should publicly do or say something related to LLMs and Siri to reassure customers that real improvements are coming to their virtual assistant. They were well behind the curve before ChatGPT blew up and now that it has, the gap between Siri and the ceiling is cavernous.

Apple is prepping their next step into wearables with a mixed reality headset. A reliable voice based input option sounds like it would be a great help for a device like that, which lacks the kind of input options we’re accustomed to. Users will have to learn the conventions of the new operating system that hardware will run. A version of Siri who can understand and take reliable action on the vast majority of possible user requests could smooth out the barrier to entry and make onboarding much easier.

Beyond the headset, a better Siri would be a boon for those who own Apple Watches and/or AirPods. Both devices are limited in the input they can receive but both can hear their users’ voices. Can you imagine being able to triage your emails while on a morning run with only your voice? Or, how about figuring out and then composing an ingredient list for dinner while you cross the grocery store parking lot and fetch a shopping cart?

Apple held an AI summit a few weeks ago and just today AppleInsider reported that tvOS might be the guinea pig for an improved Siri. If that’s the case, June’s WWDC event would be their earliest, most visible moment to show what progress is being made to excite developers, users, and the press. Apple really shouldn’t waste that opportunity to at least tease something.
