Three of Apple’s biggest leakers have been talking about foldable devices this week.
Ming-Chi Kuo issued a handful of tweets, communicating his confidence in such a device:
I’m positive about the foldable iPad in 2024 and expect this new model will boost shipments and improve the product mix.
The same day, Mark Gurman weighed in to refute Kuo:
As I wrote before, 2023 will be a light year for the iPad (and Watch). Also not hearing anything about a foldable iPad in 2024.
The next day, Ross Young replied to Gurman’s tweet, suggesting Apple is working on a foldable notebook.
Have heard about a 20.5” foldable notebook for 2025, but nothing about a foldable iPad for 2024.
They’re some of the most prolific and accurate Apple leakers and none of them are saying the same thing. I think there’s some smoke here, though.
It’s safe to assume Apple is working on foldable devices; they try a lot of form factors and innovations that don’t make it out of R&D. They have to. The foldable phone market is starting to mature, so Apple may feel the need to jump in if that market grows enough. Larger foldables are moving slowly but you could argue it’s more impactful to fold a big device down into something smaller.
There are a couple existing folding screen devices that may offer a general glimpse at what Young and Kuo are suggesting—Asus’ Zenbook 17 Fold OLED and Lenovo’s Thinkpad X1 Fold. Personally, I’m more interested in Lenovo’s dual screen Yoga Book 9i laptop. You can sign me up for something like that with an M-series chip, a touch-friendly macOS, and a next-gen taptic engine to make the on screen keyboard more compelling.
